GENDER IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN AND THEIR IMPACT

GENDER  IDENTITY

To know about gender identity development, first of all, we
should know what gender Identity really means “Gender
Identity is a personal sense of one's  own gender.” It’s a
personal conception of oneself as a male or female.

GENDER IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT

When children develop a sense of being a boy and a girl then we can say that the sense of gender identity is started developing in them.
Around the age of two children started to become conscious
of the physical difference between boy and girl.
By the age of four, most children have a stable sense of gender
identity.

“ According to SIGMUND FREUD  who has given the STAGES
OF DEVELOPMENT  in children, PHALLIC STAGE is the start
of gender identity development in children. at this stage,
children started getting the sense of gender identity through
ELECTRA CAMPUS  and OEDIPUS CAMPUS.”
(Electra campus – girls getting attracted towards fathers )
(Oedipus campus – boys getting attracted towards mothers )
Electra campus and the Oedipus campus tell us that children
are started getting the concept of male and female. The phallic
stage took place at the age of 4 to 5.

ITS  IMPACT  ON MENTAL  HEALTH

When there is a disturbance in the development of gender identity in children then it puts a huge impact on the mental health of children. Children understand the true meaning of gender Identity when they reach adolescence and the conflicts start to appear from then only.
When a boy gets a sense of being gay, his preference is
different, his choices are different. when he started getting
the thoughts that his physical self differs from his inner self
and he is not fitting in the society than his mental health
started getting affected.
Many gender identity disorders triggered due to gender
identity disturbance in children and adolescents.

or gender. they feel detached from their biological gender.
Their biological gender and desired gender are completely
