Bachelor of homeopathic medicine and surgery is an undergraduate degree course in the
medical field. It entitles a person to hold a doctoral qualification in homeopathy. 
Homeopathy comes under the system of alternative medicines.
It was a system developed in Germany nearly 200 years ago and is based on two
unconventional theories:

According to this theory, a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar
symptoms in healthy people.

Law of minimum dose-

It states that the lower the dose of a medicine, the greater is its effectiveness. Hence, most of the homeopathic medicines are used in diluted forms.

Homeopathy is the third most popular medication system in India, preceded by Allopathy and Ayurveda systems. A homeopathic doctor takes care of the patient by trying to enhance the natural healing capacity of the patient’s body. Every treatment is individualized and altered according to each patient’s needs. The doctor tries to maintain the equilibrium between the emotions, mind, and body as this system believes that there exists an interrelation between the three. 

Since there are no side effects of this medication, it is being widely adopted by more and more people these days. Hence, it is a great career option for students aspiring for a medical degree. 

Eligibility-

The eligibility to opt for this course is passing your senior secondary examination or any equivalent examination with minimum 50% marks in Science stream, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The candidate would have to appear and clear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and should be of minimum 17 years of age. There is no upper age limit. Duration-

In India, the duration of this course is 5.5 years, including 1-year training and internships period. Since it includes a lot of practice, it can’t be pursued via distance education and is a regular course.

Fees -

The typical fees for a BHMS degree is Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 7 lakhs, varying from college to college.

Job prospects-

Career opportunities for a BHMS degree holder are quite many. He/she becomes a certified doctor and is hence, eligible to set up a private practice. A practitioner can also seek a career as a medical consultant or as a doctor in private and government hospitals. He/she can also work as a professor or lecturer in an institution. A career as a pharmacist or a researcher is also a possibility.

Salary-

A homeopathic doctor can get a starting salary of Rs. 40,000 to 60,000 per month in the government sector whereas a private practitioner can earn up to 35,000 to 40,000 per month. 

This income may increase with an increase in expertise and experience.
